Natural History Museum, Fribourg

Split between the old listed Arsenal warehouse and a new ‘pivot’' building, Fribourg's new Natural History Museum will see the Arsenaux site redeveloped to become the centrepiece of a rapidly changing area.

Extending the existing built environment, the new building will link the site's two levels with a paved urban square at the museum's entrance below, and a green and pleasant square above. The main entrance to the museum is part of a plinth, just like those of neighbouring buildings, and serves as an interface with the 2,000 m2 of permanent underground exhibition space. In the above-ground section, the multi-use room and temporary exhibitions can be accessed separately from the upper level. Connected to this new building, the old warehouse will be refurbished and fitted out with new facilities: workshops, offices, an arts outreach area, lobby and cafeteria. Furthermore, with a view to future densification of the site, the upper level will have a reserve of 1,400 m2 for immediate or later development.
